We Will Always Remember!

In the early morning hours of January 28, 2000, an incident would occur that would shock the sensibilities of an entire state, disrupt the professional fabric of it's largest law enforcement agency, bring about massive changes in policing methods, and cause continuous discussion regarding the relationships of whites and blacks for years to come.

On that early January morning, Cornel Young, Jr., son of the highest-ranking African American police officer in the state (and a founder of our organization), was shot and killed by two members of his own department when they mistook him for a crime suspect. He was the first African American officer in the State of Rhode Island to have been killed in the line of duty, and the only known officer to have died as the result of "friendly fire"

Cornel's untimely death has had a profound impact and effect on each of us - in the manner in which we conduct ourselves both personally and professionally. His life, his actions, his warmth will not be forgotten. In his living, he was a hero to his family and close friends; in his dying, he became a hero to an entire community.

To his family, we will always be ever ready to come to your aid and need, as you are constantly in our prayers. To his friends, we join you in your memories.

We hope you will join us in sharing your thoughts and remembrances of our lost brother-in-arms, and share in our prayers for him. For he has been called to reside with Him who rules us all. And it is His Plan that Cornel now follows.
